Full moon, full house

We are moved in, just in time for the full moon which we can see from our high living room windows in early morning. DSCN6637

The house is amazing: warm, spacious, fascinating, sculptural, full of views of tree tops and the park. We had a lovely celebration with friends for Lynn’s 65th Birthday and it generated some nice photos. (A big thank you to Ricardo for these great shots.) Spring Progress

Its been a cold start to the spring in Maryland and work has slowed a bit. Most changes are occurring inside: the rough in of electrical, hvac, plumbing, all geared for close-in. The windows went in this week, see below. Framing is starting to reveal the design, see pictures of the front rooms framed and their CAD renderings right below each picture, showing what it will be like when the drywall goes up. The house is getting a lot of love–the contractor and subs are excited to be working on the project. It is really a unique home in our city. Our Hispanic workers call the house “muy chola” — “very pretty homegirl”.

The Pour

From Lynn: The weather is holding with temperatures at 66 degrees and things are moving ahead quickly. The foundation walls are in place and today the foundation floor, the slab, was poured. The floor is extremely well insulated for a basement floor and will offer the house a lot of protection and a barrier to the natural moisture of the ground it sits on. Exterior walls are weatherproofed, next comes the backfill, as the removed mountains of dirt get put back in. Meanwhile, we are starting to think about lots of other details, so never a boring moment.

Transforming Silver Spring

From Tad and Lynn: We celebrate the shift from traditional brick buildings to contemporary architecture in Silver Spring! The once sleepy downtown landscape is transforming, spearheaded by the amazing labs of United Therapeutics, designed by Schick Goldstein Architects and Ewing Cole. The labs on Spring Street are geometric, exciting, and futuristic–emblematic of UT! Our new house is tucked into a lovely shaded residential street, but only 6 blocks away from these great buildings, so we feel like we fit into the new aesthetic.

The new Silver Spring Civic Center, is geometric, clean lines, mixed materials and glass and has been embraced by the public and the outdoor plaza hosts events, music and the Saturday farmers market.
